About Gary Kutscher

Historical / Biographical Artist

From a very early age, Gary Kutscher has been drawn to vivid realism in his art. Images taken from an old family bible inspired him to draw and paint scenes such as “Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane” while he was still very young.

He received his BA from Southern Illinois University School of Art and spent time studying at the Atelier Neo- Medici in France in 1980 and 1984 under the Master Patrick Betaudier. There he learned an approach to painting known as the "technique mixte" which has its antecedents with the early Northern masters and Jan van Eyck.

In his latest paintings, Gary captures a historical event or person through his extensive research and renders the moment in a classical style reminiscent of Dutch still-lifes of the  17th and 18th centuries.

Gary lives in Huntington Beach with his wife, Maria, and two sons, Nicholas and Nathan. He is also an avid runner and is the race director for the OC (Orange County) Marathon.
